Skin and Cell Membrane Health

  • Evening Primrose oil contains a number of essential fatty acids with the main therapeutic compounds being linoleic acid and gamma linolenic acid (GLA). These compounds are precursors to the anti-inflammatory prostaglandin E1
  • Linolenic acid and GLA are involved in maintaining the integrity of the skin and exerting an anti-inflammatory action in mild skin disorders. Lower levels of GLA are reported in atopic dermatitis and eczema
  • A study on Evening Primrose Oil in patients with atopic dermatitis found that these patients tend to have lower levels of GLA compared to non atopic dermatitis. Treatment with Evening Primrose oil increased GLA levels and reduced the severity of skin inflammation, dryness and itchiness

Inflammation and Arthritis

  • Evidence suggests Evening Primrose Oil supplementation may temporarily relieve the symptoms and pain in arthritis

Women's Health

  • Researchers have found that some women with PMS may not be able to adequately convert linoleic acid to GLA resulting in an increase of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin is responsible for many of the symptoms of PMS. It is believed that supplementing with Evening Primrose Oil rich in GLA would bypass the problem normalising sensitivity and reducing PMS symptoms.
  • Common symptoms of PMS are breast pain and tenderness, low mood, irritability, headaches and bloating.
