The ancient Greeks through to the middle ages believed that St John’s Wort possessed ‘magical’ powers. St Johns Wort has a long history of use as a mood-elevating substance, this proposed ‘magical’ power has been demonstrated in recent research with scientific and clinical studies proving St. John's Wort’s positive effect for the treatment of mood disorders, mild anxiety, and nervous tension. It is generally considered that the pharmacological activities of St John’s Wort are attributed to a compound named Hypericin amongst other compounds contained in the herb.

Irritability and low moods

  • Helps relieve feelings of sadness and irritability, low motivation, disinterest in pleasure or daily activities
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum) has been investigated extensively in scientific studies showing pharmacological activity within several neurochemical systems believed to be implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders. Animal studies have found that Hypericum inhibits the reuptake system for neurotransmitters serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine and GABA. This mechanism is similar to how many medicines for mood disorders work. St Johns Wort has comparative effects to common drugs used to regulate and uplift mood. Neurotransmitter malfunction or an imbalance may be a contributing factor to many mood disorders.
  • The body of evidence in understanding how St John’s Wort works is developing. There are a number of proposed theories behind St John’s Wort mood enhancing activities, some of which may be related to a modulating relationship between the immune system and mood, as well as by inhibiting neurotransmitter such as serotonin reuptake.
  • The combination of herbs and nutrients in this formula are designed to provide relief from irritability and nervous unrest

Mild anxiety and nervous tension

  • Formulated to help relieve nervous tension and mild anxiety
  • May provide relief of sleeplessness and insomnia

Stress

  • This formula may be beneficial during times of stress and aids in the maintenance or improvement of general well being
  • Panax ginseng is perhaps the most famous medicinal plant of China, generally used as a tonic for its revitalizing properties, especially after stress
  • Ginseng was originally investigated for its adaptogenic qualities. Adaptogens are defined as a compound that increases the body’s ability to adapt to environmental factors and stressors, reducing damage to the body caused from stress.
  • Scientific evidence has shown that ginseng supports the body’s ability to cope with various stressors such as study and work
  • A variety of studies have demonstrated that Ginkgo exerts neuroprotective effects on the nervous system during times of stress
