Fluid regularly leaks into body tissues from the blood. The lymphatic system is a network of tubes throughout the body that drains this fluid (called lymph) from tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream. Fluid retention occurs when the fluid has not been removed from the tissues. The two broad categories of fluid retention include generalised fluid retention, when swelling occurs throughout the body and localised fluid retention when particular parts of the body are affected. There are a wide range of reasons why fluid retention occurs; body's reaction to hot weather, a high salt intake, and imbalance of hormones associated with the menstrual cycle.

Signs and symptoms of fluid retention:

  • Swelling of affected body parts
  • Feet, ankles and hands are commonly affected
  • Sometimes the affected body parts may ache
  • The joints may feel stiff and movement is restricted
  • Rapid weight gain can occur over a few days or weeks, or unexplained weight fluctuations

Fluid retention

  • Dandelion leaves have a long history of use as a mild diuretic in many traditional medicines. A diuretic is a substance that increases urinary excretion, which may reduce the fluid overload in tissues of the body
  • The diuretic effect of Dandelion is believed to be due to the Potassium content
  • This formula contains extra Potassium to assist the diuretic action of Dandelion as Potassium plays an important role in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the body
  • Potassium is classed as an essential mineral in human nutrition. It is vitally important in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. Potassium also plays an important in role in the brain, nerve and muscle cells by influencing osmotic balance between cells and the interstitial fluid (fluid between cells). Muscle contraction and the sending nerve impulses rely on adequate potassium.
  • Uva Ursi is traditionally used in Western Herbal medicine to support the bladder and kidneys promoting the renal elimination of water to reduce fluid buildup.

Women's Health

  • Premenstrual water retention is a common side effect of the menstrual cycle in most women. This formula may assist fluid retention associated with PMS.
  • Lifestyle advice to aid in the relief of fluid retention; Reduce salt intake and partake in regular exercise, avoid sitting or standing without moving for prolonged periods of time. When flying, stretch your legs often and when driving, stop to stretch and walk every hour or so.
