Microgenics Hemp Seed Oil 1100mg 120 Capsules
Hemp seeds are the seeds of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. They come from the same species as cannabis (marijuana) but from a different variety and contain no THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.
Hemp seeds are rich in three essential fatty acids: omega 3 (alpha linolenic acid), omega 6 (Linoleic acid and Gamma Linolenic acid) and omega 9 (Oleic acid), which have been linked to several health benefits.
Dry, itchy skin
Studies have shown that omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids may help relieve dry skin, improve itchy skin, as seen in dermatitis or eczema. Researchers have found that supplementing with omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids for 20 weeks helped improve skin dryness and itchiness in those with atopic dermatitis, and those with eczema could decrease the use of medicated creams after that period of time.1
Due to the anti-inflammatory effects of the essential fatty acids, hemp seed oil
might also beneficial in acne.7
PMS
Up to 90% of Australian women experience at least one symptom of PMS most months and about 50% get several symptoms each month, including mood swings, breast swelling and tenderness, fluid retention, bloating and increased appetite.
Whilst PMS can have many different reasons, sensitivity to the hormone prolactin is thought to play a role.3 Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), one of the omega 6s found in hemp seeds, produces prostaglandin E1. PGE1 can reduce the effects of prolactin and may thus help relieve PMS symptoms.3
Research on women with PMS has found that taking 1 gram of essential fatty acids – including GLA – per day for 6 months resulted in a significant decrease in their PMS symptoms.4
Menopause
While it is not yet exactly known how essential fatty acids work in menopause, research has found that supplementing can help relieve mood swings and improve concentration during menopause.5,9
Studies have also found that supplementing GLA for 18 months may help increase bone density in post-menopausal women.6 It is believed that the fatty acids help stimulate bone formation.8 Post-menopausal women are at greater risk of having poor bone density due to lower levels of oestrogen, and may therefore benefit from a hemp oil supplement.
