These people can suffer from pain, inflammation or discomfort in their joints – including cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons or muscles – on a daily basis. The pain can be mild, causing soreness only after certain activities; or severe, making even limited movement, particularly bearing weight, extremely painful.
Turmeric to relieve inflammation
In traditional herbal medicine, there are several herbs that can bring relief in inflammation and joint pain. Turmeric, or Curcuma longa, is one of those herbs. It contains the active ingredient curcumin and has a long traditional use in Chinese and Indian medicine to reduce joint pain and inflammation for conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Several studies have shown that curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties3,4 because it can reduce levels of inflammatory mediators in the body.
Research has found that those who suffer from osteoarthritis and take a curcumin supplement daily, notice a significant decrease in knee pain after 3 months of taking the supplement5, as well as long-term improvement in pain and function in the knee6. Other studies found that curcumin can also help improve morning stiffness, walking time and joint swelling in those with rheumatoid arthritis7.
Willow bark for mild pain relief
Willow bark has been used for centuries for pain relief. The active ingredient in willow bark is called salicin. A derivative of salicin is the active ingredient in aspirin8. That is why some people use willow bark as an alternative to aspirin. Willow bark has shown anti-inflammatory activity in several studies9, although it needs to be noted that pain relief from willow bark supplements is not instant – it can take 1-6 weeks to notice improvements10. However, the effects may last longer than pain relief from aspirin11, and it doesn’t have the gastro-intestinal side effects that aspirin can have.
Clinical research has shown that willow bark can improve pain levels in those suffering from osteoarthritis after 6 weeks12, and in those suffering from lower back pain after 4 weeks13,14.
Black pepper to absorb Turmeric
Black pepper has been added to this formula to help with the absorption of curcumin. Piperine is the major active component of black pepper, and when combined in a complex with curcumin, has been shown to increase bioavailability of curcumin by 2000%15.
Turmeric can help reduce pain and inflammation in those with joint and back pain
Willow bark is a natural form of Salicin and can help reduce pain and inflammation in joint and back pain, without the side effects of other medication.
