Antioxidants to help reduce free radicals
Krill oil contains astaxanthin, a naturally occurring carotenoid found in marine animals which is responsible for giving krill its pink-red colour. It acts as an antioxidant and can thus help reduce inflammation as a result of free radical damage.

Oxidative stress and inflammation play a role in the development of many health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and joint pain. Due to Astaxanthin’s action as an anti-oxidant with anti-inflammatory properties, it may be beneficial in those conditions1,2.

Why Krill Oil instead of fish oil?
Unlike in fish oils where the EPA and DHA fatty acids are bound to triglycerides, the EPA and DHA fatty acids in krill oil are bound to phospholipids. Research has shown that EPA and DHA bound to phospholipids is better absorbed in the body and is more efficiently delivered to the places where it is needed3,4

The phospholipids increase absorption of EPA and DHA and reduce the risk of the fishy aftertaste some people experience when they take fish oil supplements. The reason some people experience the fishy after taste is that fish oil, bound to triglycerides, does not mix well with water and sits on the top of the watery contents in the stomach.

Because of this, there is a chance it repeats on the consumers and gives them that unpleasant fishy aftertaste. Phospholipids on the other hand mix well with water. This means that krill oil mixes with the watery stomach contents and does not sit on the top, all but eliminating the risk on a
fishy aftertaste.

Studies have also shown that krill oil is much more potent than fish oil, meaning you need less of it to achieve the same results5.
