Passionflower to improve sleep and relieve nervous tension
Passionflower has a long traditional use as a sedative and mild anti-anxiety herb. Studies have shown that passionflower can significantly help prolong sleeping time2,3.
A double-blind, randomised, controlled trial investigated a combination of passion flower, valerian and hops extracts in people diagnosed with insomnia. After 2 weeks, they found significant improvements in total sleep time, time taken to initially fall asleep, number of nightly awakenings, and insomnia severity scores. The study authors concluded that the combination of passionflower, valerian, and hops extracts is a safe and effective short-term treatment for primary insomnia4.
All three herbs investigated in this study are included in Microgenics Sound A Sleep.
Valerian to relieve sleeplessness and nervous tension
The sedative properties of valerian have been recognised for at least 2,000 years.
The plant is used in many cultures to provide relief of insomnia, mild anxiety, and conditions associated with the nervous system. Several clinical studies have shown that taking valerian can help improve difficulty falling and staying asleep5,6; and the World Health Organisation recommends that valerian can be used as a mild sedative and to help promote sleep. It suggests that, based on clinical research, the herb can be “a milder alternative or substitute for stronger synthetic sedatives in the treatment of nervous excitation and mild anxiety induced
sleep disturbances”7,8. Valerian may need to be taken for 2-4 weeks before effects are noticed9.
Vitamin B1, B3, B6 and zinc help with the synthesis of neurotransmitters
Vitamin B1, B3, B6 and zinc are included in this formula to support the conversion of the amino acid tryptophan to serotonin. Serotonin is the precursor to melatonin, a hormone responsible for the regulation of sleep.
Hops is traditionally used as a mild sedative for insomnia. There are numerous
studies showing that hops in combination with other herbs such as valerian and
passionflower is beneficial in insomnia10,11.
