Astaxanthin is a reddish pigment that occurs naturally in certain algae and causes the pink or red colour in salmon, trout, lobster, shrimp and other seafood; and is also responsible for the pinkish colour of the flamingo. At 3%, Pluvialis algae has the highest bioavailable amount of astaxanthin.1 Studies have shown that natural astaxanthin is 550 times more powerful as an antioxidant than vitamin E, 6,000 times more powerful than vitamin C, 800 times more powerful than Coenzyme Q102-5 and 20 times more potent than synthetic astaxanthin.
Health benefits of astaxanthin
Research has shown that astaxanthin can help reduce free radical damage to body cells. Free radical damage to body cells can causes inflammation.7-10 This is not a problem if the inflammation resolves quickly, but chronic inflammation is associated with many health conditions, and also plays a role in the development of wrinkles.
Supports a healthy skin
Studies have shown that as an antioxidant, astaxanthin may help protect the skin against damage due to exposure to UV light.14,15 In several studies, supplementing with astaxanthin has been shown to reduce wrinkles by increasing skin elasticity and moisture content.
It is well documented that Vitamin C is associated with improved skin elasticity and reduced facial wrinkling,18 and that vitamin E supports wound healing and enhances the rate of wound closure, especially in the elderly.

Free radical damage can affect the immune system. Clinical research has shown that supplementing with as little as 2mg astaxanthin per day for 8 weeks can improve immunity.
Vitamin E is thought to support the immune system through its antioxidant function. Significant oxidative stress can damage immune cells, and deprive the body of the tools to repair them.
