Microgenics Flaxseed Oil 1500mg 200 Capsules
Flaxseed oil, sometimes also referred to as linseed oil, is made from flax seeds that have been ground and pressed. It is a good source of the omega 3 essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) and Oleic Acid (Omega 9). This makes them a good alternative to fish oil for those who choose not to consume fish oil.
The difference with fish oil
Fish oil contains the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, while flaxseed contains the omega 3 fatty acid ALA. Unlike EPA and DHA, the body cannot readily utilize ALA, but can convert it into EPA and DHA. This means the consumer can still enjoy all the benefits associated with omega 3 fatty acids. These benefits include reducing inflammation and supporting cardiovascular health by helping to lower high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
Unlike fish oil, flaxseed oil also contains the essential fatty acid omega 6. But because flax seeds contain the highest levels of ALA (omega 3 fatty acids) of all seeds, they have a lower ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 than many other plant-based oils.9 A lower ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids has been linked to a lower risk of various chronic diseases.
The omega 9 fatty acid oleic acid is not essential because the body can produce it. However, consuming foods rich in omega 9 fatty acids instead of other types of fat may have health benefits including reducing inflammation.
Supports skin health
Flaxseed oil may help support skin health. Low levels of ALA in the diet have been associated with dry skin and poor skin quality. Clinical research has shown that supplementing with flaxseed oil for 12 weeks can help improve skin smoothness and hydration, and decrease skin sensitivity and roughness.
Further research has established that flax seed oil can help reduce a red, dry and itchy skin in atopic dermatitis – a type of eczema – by reducing skin inflammation and promoting skin regeneration. Clinical trials showed that after supplementing with flax seed oil for only 3 weeks, there was an improvement in redness, swelling, and itching.
May help relieve menopausal symptoms
There is clinical evidence that flax seed oil may help relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes. Clinical research showed that using a flaxseed oil supplement decreased hot flushes and increased quality of life for menopausal women.
